Daylight Saving Time

For the first time Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday, March 11. It almost coincides with the beginning of a much needed March Break. The weather has been bone-chillingly cold and it makes people crotchety - sometimes :)

It's too cold for the maple sap to run and our annual visit to the sugar bush will have to wait for a couple of weeks.

More Snow
It is quite beautiful to watch the snow fall... and we have a lot of it to watch. Ottawa's being hit by a snowstorm. Lots of snow. It is the first major snowstorm for Oubah and she is enjoying it. "Nothing like it in my native Djibouti," she says with a delighted smile. For the rest of us who are somewhat less enthusiastic about the 20 cm of snow, it is a reminder of how looking at things with fresh eyes is often a simple solution to percieved problems. Now where is that shovel?

Deep Freeze

After an unusually mild start to Winter, Ottawa has gone back into its typical deep freeze mode. The city is living up to its reputation for being ridiculously cold. The plus side to this is that the Rideau Canal, the world's longest skating rink is open and thousands have already flocked there to enjoy the ice and the Beaver Tails. It is also Winterlude time - Ottawa's winter festival. So it may be cold, but our hearts are warm, especially ESL hearts. Happy Valentine's Day!

Photoshop Elements and Cindy Klassen's Fifth

The reason I'm not going to talk at length about the course is that I just heard that Cindy Klassen has won her fifth medal of the Torino Olympics. Winnipeg speedskater Clara Hughes won gold in the women's 5,000 metres and Cindy claimed bronze to become Canada's most decorated Olympian of these games.

Winter Weather
Ottawa's covered in a blanket of snow and even though global warming's been playing havoc with world weather patterns, it still looks and feels like winter here. There are of course ESL students who are experiencing winter for the first time and, as always, it is quite the revelation to listen to their comments. Ottawa is a far cry from Sudan or Mexico or Sri Lanka. Weatherwise at least. Lloyd Robertson was predicting a cold, cold winter in Southern Canada on CTV news tonight. And we have a winter election to add to the mix...

Ottawa Asian Festival.

This weekend of September 10-11 Ottawa's Chinatown will be holding its first Ottawa Asian community open market festival.

It is a part of the City of Ottawa's 150th birthday celebrations. The festival is a symbol of Ottawa's rich cultural resources. It is designed to showcase the cultures and traditions of the Far East in Ottawa. It could well become an annual event.

The weekend market will be held in the parking lot at the corner of Somerset Street West and Cambridge Street and will feature lion dances, traditional Thai and Cambodian dances and martial arts demonstrations.

There will also be stalls selling a variety of goods. And then of course there is the food. Yum!

Admission is free and open to all. The festival is scheduled to open at 11 a.m. on Saturday September 10 and runs until 5 p.m. The hours for Sunday are also the same.

Look for a booth with a slew of enthusiastic teachers promoting the Ottawa ESL Schools.

Hurricane Katrina left a wake of destruction in southern USA leaving thousands homeless, hungry and in need of help. Here in Ottawa we were told to expect a month's rainfall in one day, but that didn't happen. It did rain - the fringes of Katrina - but that comparitively small amount of rain was more welcome than anything.

The Gatineau Balloon Festival is on this weekend. Hundreds of hot air balloons will take to the skies.

Ottawa's Super Ex draws to a close on Sunday night, August 28. The grand finale is a show by the Rolling Stones, as part of their World Tour. Apparently the show is sold out...

On Monday, August 29 registration begins for the Fall session of Ottawa ESL Schools and continues on Tuesday, August 30. Registration is at St. Joseph's Adult School and St. Patrick's Adult School from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. If you miss registering on these days you'll have to do it when school starts on September 6, 2005. Bring immigration documents and proof of Ontario residency.

Ottawa Tulip Festival and Allergies

Spring is here and some days it feels like summer! The Ottawa Tulip Festival is in full bloom. The tulips look as lovely as ever.

Of course with spring also comes allergy season. I'm not a great believer in over the counter allergy symptom suppressors. But then I am spared the agony of allergies, so I am not one to comment. Friends I trust believe in Homeopathy and swear by it. Getting sick? Get a Flu Buster from your local Loblaws pharmacy. Or if you are in Ottawa consult Dr. Sanford Lapedis. No NHL Hockey means...

For newcomers to English, and to Ice Hockey, the absence of an NHL hockey season may not mean very much, but it won't be long before they are caught up in the fever.

Consider doing this as a class exercise. Get your students to finish the sentence, "No NHL hockey means..." and let them tell you what they think. It is a great way of getting to know your students and a great way of introducing your students to a great Canadian tradition.

KUNG HEI FATT CHOY or Happy New Year in Cantonese. I am a few days late in my greeting and I apologize for that. My students gave me an ang pow, normally given out during Chinese New Year for good luck. It turned out to be a packet with money inside it. They said it was "lucky money."

ESL Student Wins Australian Open

Marat Safin of Russia defeated Lleyton Hewitt 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday night, to win the Australian Open Tennis Championship at Melbourne Park. This was Marat's second Grand Slam tournament title. His other win was over Pete Sampras at the 2000 U.S. Open .

Tsunami - Please Donate!

TSUNAMI!

According to news reports today the death toll in South and Southeast Asia from the earthquake off Sumatra, Indonesia, and the tidal waves that followed, is nearing 24,000.

Indonesia's vice-president said that the number of dead in his country alone may eventually exceed 25,000.

Sri Lanka has reported 12,000 deaths. India is estimated to have lost more than 7,000 people and those figures are expected to rise.

If the Indonesian numbers are accurate, the death toll from the tsunami could top 40,000.

Ottawa has turned grey and cold today... November is drawing to a close and the weather reflects it.

Optical Illusions

If you like optical illusions go to Akiyoshi Kitaoka's website. He is an associate professor of psychology at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. His site includes a variety of amazing visual effects. Many of the illusions include explanations as to why you're seeing what's not really there, such as movement when there is none, straight lines that look bent, etc. etc. Tons of fun.

Autumn

We are officially into Autumn. True to form the weather has turned warm and we are having absolutely gorgeous days. Autumn in Ottawa is always beautiful. The Gatineau Hills become a blaze of colour. One marvels at the variety of shades the leaves can turn into... you have to see it, experience it, to understand why so many people wax poetic at this annual passage of seasons. I'll post a picture soon. If you live outside Ottawa, try to get here in the next couple of weeks and feel the magic for yourself.

One World Film Festival

The One World Film Festival presented by World Inter-Action Mondiale (WIAM) promises to be an interesting and thought provoking series of documentaries on global issues.

How Sweet It Is

Here's how good it gets sometimes. It's the weekend. The rain has stopped. The sun is shining. Not a cloud in the sky. And...

Canada beats the Czech team 4-3 in the semi final of the World Cup. Finland beat the USA 2-1 in the other semi final on Friday night. The final is on Tuesday, September 14.

If I sound irrational it's because it is about hockey. You have to understand that hockey rules Canada. Even mild mannered ESL people get fanatical gleams in their eyes and dream of their hockey heroes skating to victory.

Today's vocabulary: hockey puck. ;-)

If you are looking for computer related information in simple English then go to The Newbie Club. You can become a member for free and have access to a lot of information. The site is run by Joe Robson of England. They do have guides for sale that are written in simple English - not computerese - that anyone - (even me!) can understand. But the free stuff itself can keep you busy for hours.

RAIN!

Ottawa's heaviest rain in years began early Thursday morning and went on and on and on... roofs leaked, basements flooded, cars were trapped in deep puddles. Even the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill was closed. Interestingly the Emergency Departments in the Ottawa Hospital were much less busy than usual. Apparently the inclement weather was part of the hurricane Frances that hit Florida recently.

ESL students must have learned new words such as deluge, torrent, and soaked. Not to mention umbrella ;-)

Canada plays the Czechs tomorrow in the World Cup semi finals. What World Cup? Ice Hockey of course... Fans around the country will be glued to their TV sets.

It's been a while.

Summer whizzed by, as it usually does. It has been really beautiful. The weather was cooler than usual and it felt just right. None of that draining summer humidity except for the odd day here and there. It rained a fair bit and I am told the farmers are happy with that.

Summer in Ottawa is festival time. Let's see now... we had the Jazz Festval, followed by the Blues Fest, and then the Chamber Music Festival (purportedly the biggest in the world) ... of course I shouldn't forget the Folk Music Festival which kind of rounds off the summer each year. Did I miss any of the biggies? In between we had all kinds of ethnic festivals. The Byward Market was as busy as ever with local farmers and vendors during the daytime. At night it was a paradise of restaurants, bars, pubs, musicians...

Oh yeah we even had an election sometime in between. We now have a minority Liberal government, quite a fall from the commanding majority they had going into the election. Parliament opens in October. Teachers, if you haven't taken your ESL class to Question Period in Parliament, consider it seriously. Now there's an activity that your students will remember for a long time to come.

Classes start tomorrow, September 7. Labour Day weekend is almost over and it's back to the serious business of ESL. Serious? Well yes. But also tons of fun. Nothing like it.

Sugar Bush - Here We Come!

The weather's turned nice and warm, but not too warm to go out and enjoy that old Canadian ritual - the visit to the sugar bush. We found one right in the heart of Ottawa. That shouldn't be too surprising though. This may be the only national capital in the world with a fully operational farm covering several hectares [acres to the uninitiated] right in the heart of the city.

Anyway, back to the sugar bush. We'll walk there. They've promised us pancakes and maple syrup and then of course there is the Tim Horton's on the way back. If you've never had Tim Horton's coffee, it's worth visiting Canada just for a taste. And the weather forecast calls for a sunny day!

Can't help staying on the subject of weather. It was -26ºC yesterday with the wind. Yikes! Cold even for a seasoned Canadian, it scared the wits out of some newly landed students.

Today it turned grey and in the afternoon it started snowing as if it were a blizzard the middle of January. And then, as if by magic, the sun came out and it became Spring again... there was fresh snow on the ground, the air was fresh and clean and the heavy winter coats felt too warm. The forecast calls for above zero temperatures for the next few days. Yay!

Gasoline prices are also going up with the temperature but not dropping when it falls.

The first day of Spring - according to the calendar anyway. True to form it snowed and got cold and wet.

Tamako arrived just a few days ago from Osaka, Japan. On the day she landed the temperature fell to -14ºC.

I asked her what she thought of Canada.
"Cold!" she said with a giggle.

Spring really won't start until well into April. We'll have to wait yet to see those hardy crocuses start appearing on Parliament Hill.

Maple Syrup season is upon us. Apparently it is a very good year. The sap is running abundantly and schools are planning trips to the Sugar Bush. We found one right in the midst of Ottawa, walking distance from where we are. It is run by volunteers and they will serve us a pancake and maple syrup treat when we visit next week. I can't tell you more about it. They are already swamped by the number of people wanting to visit and they asked me not to promote their location on this blog. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ancient Treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls is a major exhibition of rare artifacts including 3 of the original Dead Sea Scrolls. Test of Spoken English [ TSE ]
Adult immigrants at the Intermediate to Advanced speaking level who are preparing for an oral interview or other oral exams or those who simply seek to improve their communication skills will find this course of great value. The course will also help professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, and veterinarians to pass the Test of Spoken English conducted by universities in Canada and the USA.
The TSE preparation course is currently offered Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at St. Joseph's Adult School. Registration is ongoing. More information about the course can be obtained by calling the school at (613) 741-6808.

February is going to be a busy month. Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day and Winterlude - the winter festival in Canada's capital. The really cold weather we are having this winter will be great for the ice sculptures. If you've never been to Ottawa for Winterlude, you should. It's the experience of a lifetime!
